A sad accident on the Davis & Broiler's farm, four miles east of town, at 11 o'clock Monday forenoon, when Theodore Popp, who works the place, met his death in a peculiar and untimely way.

Mr. Popp was picking corn near the Milwaukee track as the 11 o'clock passenger came along, and had just finished his load. The team became frightened at the train and ran in a circle, and as they neared him, he ran towards them, jumped for the side line and was jerked off his feet, failing underneath the wagon, the wheels passing over his chest and crushing several ribs, which punctured his lungs. The team ran to the fence, turned and came back to where Mr. Popp was and stopped. Although in a dying condition, he crawled on the load of corn and the team went to the house of their own accord, dragging the lines. Mrs. Popp. seeing the team standing by the gate and her husband on the load, but not getting off, went out to see what was the matter. She helped him in the house and called medical aid, but the injuries were so severe that he gradually sank away until death relieved him of his sufferings at a little past 2 o'clock that day.

Theodore Popp was born at Blankenmoor. Germany, on Dec. 17 1888, came to America in 1902 and after living in Tama county for two years, came to Hartley, where he has lived ever since. He was 24 years and 10 months old.

On Feb. 26 of this year he was married to Miss Viola Hannings and leaves her a bride of but 17 years of age. An aged mother survives him in Germany. He has seven brothers, five in Germany, while Hans and Henry live here. Five sisters survive him, four in Germany and Mrs. Henry Eckhart of Minnesota, who is here to attend the funeral.

Early in life Theodore united with the Lutheran church and has lived a just and upright life, gaining the respect and confidence of all who know him. His untimely death is mourned by many a friend who has learned to love him.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Evangelical Trinity church, the pastor, Rev. Fischer, speaking from the text found in Psalms 39:5-7, and the body laid to rest in Hartley's beautiful cemetery.
