William J. Byers, 62, of Archer, died Saturday in the Veterans Hospital at LaJolla, California.

William J. Byers was born Jan. 26, 1918, near May City. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, serving in Africa. He was a prisoner of war 30 months. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1945.

He married Nellie Ennis Dec. 20, 1945. They lived near Hartley seven years, then moved to Archer where he was employed as foreman of the county maintenance department 28 years.

Survivors include the widow: one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joleen) Palmer of Valley Center, Calif.; one son. Randy of Brandon, S.D.; two granddaughters; two brothers, Elmer of May City and Donald of Spencer; and five sisters, Mrs. Pete Wiedenkamp of Storm Lake, Mrs. Milford Riedemann of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Duane Sullivan of Spencer, Mrs. Ray Petersen of Sutherland and Mrs. Donald Dempsey of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the United Methodist Church at Archer. The Rev. Albert Cocke and the Rev. Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley under direction of the Sanborn Funeral Home.
