John Brehmer (1879-1960)

John Brehmer, the son of John and Mary Peters Brehmer, was born November 27, 1879 at Plainview, Iowa. He passed into eternal rest November 6, 1960, in Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 10 days.

He lived at Plainview until he was 19 years old, and it was there that he attended the rural schools near his home. He had lived in the Hartley community for about 62 years, and for many years was a stock buyer in this area. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Hartley.

On August 27, 1908 he was united in marriage to Alma Gierke at Hartley. They were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1958. To them were born seven children, three of whom preceded their father in death. They were: Merritte, Max, and Louis. He was also preceded by four brothers and three sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alma: two sons, Forrest of Oakland, California; and Maurice of Piedmont, California; two daughters: Louise, (Mrs. Lloyd Cade) of Napa, California, and Amy, (Mrs. Vincent Bellock) of Villa Park, Illinois, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. E. W. Bertram of Hartley as well as other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 9 at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Church with Rev. D. D. Samuelson officiating. The Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Stanley Hooper sang "Face to Face", with Mrs. Lyle Shinkle accompanying her at the organ. Pallbearers were Mr. Brehmer's sons and grandsons, Forrest Brehmer, Maurice Brehmer, John Brehmer, Ronald Brehmer, Ray Brehmer; and a nephew, Art Lage. Mrs. Wilmer Jacobs and Mrs. Grace Jansen were in charge of the flowers. He was placed at rest in the Pleasant View cemetery in Hartley.
