Richard Witt, the son of Peter and Margaretha Ramm Witt was born December 26, 1885, at St. Margrethon, Germany. He passed away February 13, 1970, at the Hartley Community Hospital at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 18 days.

He came to the U.S. in 1903 and lived in Keystone, Iowa, until 1908 when he moved to Hartley. He was engaged in farming for 37 years and retired in 1945.

He was united in marriage to Matilda Patzlaff on April 8, 1909, at Hartley, Iowa. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Germany and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one daughter-in-law. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Matilda; five daughters, Alma (Mrs. Richard Harders), Elsie and Dorothy all of Hartley, Bertha (Mrs. Paul Gruenhagen) of Paullina, Iowa and Irene of Spencer, Iowa; two sons. Herman and Gilbert both of Hartley: six grandchildren and ono great grandchild; one brother, Gus of Hartley and one sister Bsrtha Kloppenbaugh of Germany, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Richard Witt were held Monday, February 16 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Hartley. Mr. Witt was the father of Mrs. Paul Gruenhagen of Paullina. Reverend A. 0. Bleeke was clergyman. Soloist was A. C. Hoper with Mrs. Cloy Hirt as organist. Pallbearers were Albert Vogt, Herman Nagle, Raymond Witt, Floyd Smith, Ervin Harders and Dennis Gruenhagen. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley with arrangements by Baumgarten Funeral Home.
