Mr. Steven Poppema, age 91, of Sheldon, formerly of Hospers, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon. A funeral service was held on Friday, March 7, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiated. Burial followed at the Hospers Cemetery under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Steven was born August 11, 1911, in rural Hospers, the son of John and Maggie (Reitsma) Poppema. He was raised at Hospers.

On March 17,1933, he married Jeanette Peters at Hospers. They farmed at Hospers until 1961. They then moved into Hospers and he was employed by Allan Farms. In 1989, they became residents, of the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

She died Jan. 31, 1995, at Sheldon. In January of 2003, Steve became a resident of the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.

Mr. De Vries(?) was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory and sang in a Men's Quartet. Mr. and Mrs. Poppema were also custodians of the church for several years. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Junior John and Janice Poppema of Hospers, Carol and Jerry De Vries of Englewood, Colo., Roger and Donna Poppema of Sheldon and Howard and Joyce Poppema of Hospers; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was precededed death by an infant son, John Junior; five brothers, Herman, John, Fred (as a child),Fritz and Bill Poppema; and a sister, Hattie Oordt.
