Mrs. Marie Kowalke passed away Wednesday, October 9, 1946 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Sheldon, where she had been an invalid patient for two and a half years. She suffered a stroke about four years ago from which she never fully recovered.

Marie Guse was born in Tarnowke, Germany on November 21, 1879 and at the time of her death had attained the age of 67 years. At the age of three years she came to the United States with her parents, Christoph and Augusta Guse, coming directly to Sanborn.

On November 2, 1898 she was united in marriage to Julius Kowalke at Sanborn. To this union, two sons were born, Irvin and Edgar. Her husband preceded her in death 35 years ago and a son, Irvin, in 1935.

Mrs. Kowalke was one of a family of nine children. Three brothers and three sisters have passed away.

She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith when a young girl at St. John's Lutheran church in Sanborn. She has been a resident of O'Brien county for 64 years. For 22 years she was employed as a saleslady at tho Ellerbroek store in Sheldon. She was affiliated with Coral Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and Golden Sheaf Camp, Royal Neighbors of America, both in Sanborn.

Surviving is one son, Edgar, and an only grandson, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Albert and William Guse, both of Sanborn, besides other relatives and a host of friends who mourn her departure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 12 at 2:00 p. m. at the Temple Mortuary in Sheldon. Rev. Louis G. Krebs, of St. Paul's Lutheran chui'ch, Sheldon, conducted thej last I'ites. Recorded musical selections were "Beautiful Isle of Somewlierp" and "Rock of Ages." Pallbearers were George Eberly, John J. Walters, John Roetzel, Peter Ellerbroek, Emil Schultz and Paul Huff.

Burial was made in the family lot in Roseland cemetery at Sanborn.

Sanborn relatives and friends attending the services included Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Guse and daughter, Eileen, Mr. and Mrs. W A. Guse, Mrs. Minnie Tipp, Bernard Tipp, Mr. and Mrs, Matt Radloff, Mrs. Amanda Harges, Mrs. A. K. Foote, Mrs. Helen Ott, Mrs. A. D. Shaw and Mrs. C. A. Hakeman.
