William Henry Hinkey, the son of Dietrich and Henrietta Voss Hinkey, was born February 13, 1916 at Hartley, Iowa. His entire lifetime was spent in this community and he passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital at Hartley on March 24, 1961, at the age of 66 years, 1 month and 11 days.

He was graduated from Hartley High School in 1933. For many years he was employed as a baker at Russell's Bakery and for 13 years, he had owned a tavern in Hartley. He had been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. He also belonged to the Arthur Kirchoff Post #288 American Legion of Hartley and to the Hartley Chamber of Commerce.

William H. Hinkey entered service September 23, 1942 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served as a Private First Class with the 3230th Engr. SV. Bn., United States Army. His overseas duty was from February 16, 1945 until January 25, 1946 in the European Theater and was involved in battles in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received his Honorable Discharge January 31,1946 at the Separation Center in Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

His marriage to Aniella Kunst took place November 1, 1946 at Jackson, Minnesota. There were 2 children born to this union.

He is survived by his wife, 2 children: Sharron, Mrs. Gary Weis, of Mankato, Minnesota and Donald of Hartley, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Mike, Mark and Angela Weis and Ross, Rosalie and Sarah Hinkey, one sister Kathryn Crowner of Arnolds Park, Iowa as well as other relatives and his many friends.

Funeral services for William H. Hinkey, 66 of Hartley, were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley on Friday, March 27, 1981, at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Bernard Sayler officiating. Casket bearers were Verbs Fanning, Wilbur Wacker, Warren Jenkins, Keith Riedemann, Lloyd Woltersdorf and Arlo Snider. The presentation of the flag was by Arthur Kirchoff Post #288 of the American Legion, Hartley, Iowa. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley with the Baumgarten Funeral Home of Hartley in charge of arrangements.
