By fastening a rope to a rafter in a shed at the rear of his home, Adam Meehlhause, a resident of this city for the past 42 years, committed suicide by hanging himself Sunday morning. The body was found by his son-inlaw, Bob Watt, who noticing the door of the shed closed, went to investigate. He immediately called Fred Steffen, a neighbor, and they called Coroner Houlihan of Sheldon, who came and took the body down. According to reports, Mr. Meehlhause had been in ill health, which with financial and other worries, is believed to have caused him to commit the rash deed.

Adam Meehlhause was born in Lee County, Ill., July 15, 1870. He was baptized in the Evangelical Church faith while a small boy. In 1883 he migrated with his parents to Iowa, locating at Dysaitt, later moving to Hartley, la., in 1894. At the time of his death he was 64 years, 4 months and 5 days of age.

On April 30, 1899, he was married to Nettie Schadt. Five daughters came to bless this union, Marie Chapin, Hartley; Anna Costello, Los Angeles, Calif.; Bernice Seherzer, Melvin; Lillian Dwinger, Everly, and Vera Watts, Hartley.

His wife preceeded him in death May 1, 1937.

Those left to mourn his departure besides his five daughters are eight grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters. The brothers and sisters are: Jacob, John, Charley, Rudolph and Henry, all of Hartley, Martha Landgrebe and Mary Rost, of Brandt S. Dak., and Lena Adolph, of Chicago, Ill., besides many other relatives and friends.

He was a kind and loving father, esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Wednesday at 2 P. M. in charge of Rev. E. J. Flummer. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette. Interment was made in Pleasant View cemetery. The Foley Funeral Home had charge of the funeral arrangements.
