Maria Schnitzer was born in Kure, Hessen, Germany, July 17, 1846, and passed way Sept. 12, 1919, at the age of 73 years, l month and 26 days. She was married to John Meehlhause in the year 1865 and came to this ountry in 1868 and made their home in Illinois for 14 years, from there they moved to Dysart, Iowa and later to a farm near Hartley, moving to town some nine years ago.

Mr. Meehlhause preceeded her in death January 1, 1906.

To this union ten children were born, Lizzie who died in infancy, Jake, Adam, John, Charley, Rudolph and Henry all of whom live in or near Hartley, Mrs. Martha Landgrebe and Mrs. Mary Rost of Brandt, S. D., and Mrs. Lena Adolph of Sioux City, all of whom were with her during her last sickness.

She also leaves 34 grandchildren, six having preceeded her in death, one John Rost was killed on the firing line, Nov. 10, 1918. She also leaves a brother in Germany.

When a child she became a member of the Evangelical church of which she remained a faithful member to the end. She will be greatly missed in the horns and by her many friends.

"Good night, mother, close your eyes,
Sleep the sleep deserving,
Finished now life's fabric lies
Gone the hours of serving,
Good night, mother, tho you sleep,
Love shall not forske you;
'We, who watch alone-' shall weep,
But we would not wake you."

The funeral services were held "Tuesday afternoon in the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. Lontow, assisted by Rev T. S. Bassett. The former spoke in German, preaching the text "Many hath chosen that good part which will not be taken from her," and the latter spoke on the "Value of Christian Motherhood."

Music was rendered by a quartet, Messrs Will and John Linder and 'Mrs. Lantow, Bertha Linder and Miss Slaught sang a solo. The floral tributes were very beautiful and ex pressive of the high esteem in which Mrs. Meehlhause was held by her many friends.

There has gone from our midst a Christian woman of the noblest type. A unique and beautiful feature of the funeral was the fact that the six sons were the pall bearers. The body was laid to rest in the Hartley cemetery in the family plot.
