Funeral services in memory of Lillian Sonksen were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Rev. Milo Sheldon officiated. Casket bearers were Roger Jacobs, Keith Jacobs, Dwight Jacobs, Oscar Kreisel, Stan Jacobs and Dwayne Jacobs. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Christina (Jacobs) Sonksen, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Martensen) Jacobs, was born at Hartley, Iowa, on August 11, 1907. She lived her youth and received her education in the Hartley area. As a young adult, Lillian moved to eastern Iowa where she resided for several years.

She was united in marriage to Martin Sonksen on August 20, 1930 at Hartley. Following their marriage, they farmed in eastern Iowa before moving to northwest Iowa in 1943. Lillian and Martin lived in the Sanborn and Hartley areas. While living in Hartley, Lillian was the custodian at the Hartley Public Library for 17 years and custodian of the Trinity United Church of Christ for 13 years.

Martin died in 1982. Lillian continued to make her home in Hartley and she entered the Mann Wing of the Community Memorial Health Center at Hartley on November 20, 1996, and she died there on December 5,1998.

Lillian is survived by her brothers and sisters: Helma Gruhn, John Jacobs and Edward Jacobs, all of Hartley, Earl Jacobs of Sanborn, Glenn Jacobs of Denver, Colorado, Delbert Jacobs of Kansas City, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Harry Jacobs; and two sisters: Hilda Kreisel and Marie Holman.

Lillian was an active and faithful member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley and she was also a member of the Dorcas Society. She also belonged to the Hartley American Legion Auxiliary and had served as President of that organization. Special interests of Lillian's included gardening and baking, and especially baking bread.
