Irene Laura Bailey, the daughter of Chris and Laura Wilson Fokken, was born January 4, 1922 in Raymond, South Dakota and baptized in the Lutheran faith. Her early childhood years were spent in Raymond until her family moved to Hartley, Iowa in 1934. She graduated from Hartley High School in 1940.

Irene married Charles Bailey on April 12, 1948 in Sioux City, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Sioux City for a short time before moving to Spencer, Iowa. She was employed at South Bend Fishing and Tackle for six years and later at The Hotel for 30 years, until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.

Mrs. Bailey passed away at her home in Spencer on May 7, 1998 at the age of 76. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Carol and Lonny McKewon of Spencer: two granddaughters: Stephanie, and Jennifer and her husband, Matt Kuehler of Spencer; three great-grandchildren: Jesse, Madison and Macy Kuchier: one brother, Herman [sic - Harmon] Fokken of Remsen, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

Services in memory of Irene Laura Bailey, formerly of Hartley, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, 1998, at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Pastor Paul Kaldahl officiated. Casket bearers were David Fokken, Joel Fokken, Matthew Kuehler, Bill Kuehler, Joe Kuehler and Nathan Kuehler. Interment was at 1:30 p.m. on Monday in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Warner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
