CHARLES L. BRYANT

Charles L. Bryant, the son of Joseph J. Bryant and Lucy LaPlant Bryant, was born in Marshall County, Iowa, on May 6, 1877. He was the sixth of a family of seven children. When he was four years old, his mother died and he went to live with relatives. After his father's remarriage in 1884, however, he spent some time in the parental home. In the fall of 1887, he moved with his family to O'Brien County, where he continued to reside the rest of his life.

On May, 4, 1897 he was united in marriage to Nora P. Wilson. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive their father.

Charles farmed in Grant township for fifty-seven years. A highly respected member of the community, he served as a township trustee for many years. He was a school director and the president of the Grant-Omega telephone company.

In May 1944 he purchased a small acreage on the edge of Hartley. For several years he farmed land close to town. He retired from active labor two years ago. Last year, in 1957, they had the good fortune to observe their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

Charles became ill during the Christmas season. He failed gradually during the following weeks. He died quietly in his own home on Thursday, April 17, 1958 at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 11 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, Nora; one daughter, Eva Marie, who is a teacher in the high school at Hampton, Iowa; and three sons, Arlie, of Cherokee, Wilbur, of Canton, S. D., and Harold of Hartley, and their wives and families which include ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one half-sister, Mrs. Bessis Dake, of Hollywood, Calif., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Five brothers, one sister, one half-sister, and one half-brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held in the Foley Funeral Home with Rev. Baymond A. Roloff officiating. Final resting place was in Pleasant View Cemetery, at Hartley. Pallbearers were: Merle Haye, Merle Smith, Clinton Cooper, Edwin Zinn, Ernest Wohlert, and Gilbert Bruegman. Out of town relatives attending were from Sutherland, Primghar, and Clemons, Iowa, and Henning and Minneapolis, Minn.
