Emmy Elizabeth, nee Bern, Petersen, the daughter of Heinrich and Bertha Schwarten Bern, was born July 26, 1914 at Kossau, Schleswig Holstein, Germany. She passed away at the Hartley Community Hospital September 13, 1970, at the age of 56 years, 1 mont and 18 days.

She attended elementary school in Germany and received her high school education in the United States. She came to the United States January 9, 1929, and lived in Sioux City, Iowa until 1941. She was then united in marriage to Adolf Petersen, January 18, 1941 at Peterson, Iowa.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hartley and an active member in St. Paul's Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, and her father. Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Mrs. Bertha Bern of Hartley; three sons: Kenneth and Arthur, both of Hartley, Lester of Killeen, Texas; two daughters: Mary Lou (Mrs Richard Chochon) of Clary Center, Nebraska, Charlotte (Mrs Patrick Roland) of Denver, Colo; one brother, Walter of Primghar; two sisters: Elsie (Mrs Henry Nissen) of Sutherland, Frieda (Mrs Karl Ruschmann) of Primghar; four grandchildren, other relatives and her many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 16, 1970 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. Pastor Thomas Klinkenberg officiated.

Pallbeareares were John Nielsen, Eddie Hilbert, Wm. Pahl, Louis Muhs, Fred Will and Robert Rohlf. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley with Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
