Will Hesse (1896-1979)

Services were held for Will Hesse at the Trinity United Church of Christ at Hartley on Monday, January 8. Rev. Bernard Sayler officiated. The casket bearers were Donald Treimer, Harlan Goetsch, Robert Han­sen, Virgil Treimer, Earl Norton and Lester Tewes. The honorary casket attendants were Max Hinz,- Hobart Putnam, Eldo Hansen, Ernest Wohlert, Ernest Mengel and Harry Ketelsen. Burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley, Iowa' with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge. Military services were conducted at the graveside by Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post 288 of the American Legion, Hartley, W. R. Vezina, Commander.

Will Herman Hesse, the son of Henry and Mary Mehlberg Hesse, was bom December 5,1896 in Minonk, Illinois. He moved with-his parents to Hartley, Iowa in the spring of 1900 and lived here the rest of his life. He graduated from Hartley High School in 1914 and then graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. He served in the United States Army during World War One and then farmed with his brother, Gay.

He was united in marriage to Nina Halverson at Onawa, Iowa on June 5, 1933. They became the parents of four children. Since 1927 he owned and operated the Hub Clothiers in Hartley, retiring in 1965.

He was taken into Beacon Lodge #495 AF and AM in 1919 and became a life member in 1969. He was also a member of the Sioux City Consistory. He was a charter member of Arthur K. Kirchhoff Post #288 of the American Legion and received his life membership in 1970. He was very active in the Legion, especially in building the Legion Hall, now known as the Community Building. He was a life member of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ and the Brotherhood.

He passed away at the hospital in Hartley on January 4, 1979 at the age of 82.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nina; three sons and their wives: LeRoy and Kay Hesse of Newton, James and Helen Hesse of Hartley and Will Jr. and Linda Hesse of Newton; and one daughter and her husband, JoAnn and Phil Thomas of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. E. W. (Dorothea) Dunn of Hartley; other relatives and many friends.
