Mrs. Mary Hesse Passed Away Sunday Morning

Again on Sunday morning the Angel of Death entered one of our Hartley homes and removed one of our best-known and most well-beloved citizens. With stunning suddenness the news spread Sunday morning that Mrs. Mary Hesse had died in the early morning hours of that day following a heart attack.

Mrs. Mary Hesse was born on the 30th of March, 1868 at Berlin, Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mehlberg. Her parents were devout Christian people and the girl was baptized and confirmed and well-educated in the land of her birth.

In her adolescent years she came with her parents and sister and brothers to America to seek a new home which they found at Mlnonk, Ill.

In 1892 she was married to Mr. Henry H. Hesse at Minonk, Ill. There they resided until 1899, and there their three children wore born to them. To these children Mrs. Hesse was a devoted and loving mother. She had a rare understanding of the problems and needs of young people which she retained all of her life, and which made the home life a pleasant and happy one, free from the friction which so often mars the relationship between parents and children.

She had need of this gift in a special measure since the problem of rearing her children fell to her lot as Mr. Hesse was taken from her side, after only sixteen years of married life. In 1899 the family came to Hartley where Mr. Hesse engaged in business in which he was very successful. In 1908 he passed away following a short illness of typhoid-pneumonia.

Mrs. Hesse continued to make her home here, taking an active part in all civic, charitable, and. social affairs, and making a host of friends by her kindly, cheerful disposition. She attained the age of 67 years, 8 months and 1 day.

Her sudden death is deeply mourned by three children: Dorothy, Mrs. Everett Dunn of Sioux City, Iowa; Gerhardt H. and William H. both of Hartley; eight grandchildren; her four brothers; Herman Mehlberg; Ferdinand Mehlberg of Raymond, S. D.; William Mehlberg; Franz Mehlberg of Flannegan, Ill., three sisters-in-law; two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical church, its Dorcas society, and the Daughters of Ruth Bible class; of the Order of the Eastern Star, Golden Sheaf Chapter No. 181; of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Women's Relief Corps; the Emanon Club, and the T. N. S. Club, among all of whom she will be sadly missed.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and at 2:30 at the M. E. church, Rev. F. W. Budy officiating. The beautiful ritual of the Order of the Eastern Star was carried out, and the mixed quartette ot Trinity sang several selections.

The body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in Pleasant View cemetery.
