Vernon "Scritch" Bogaard, the son of Harry and Minnie (Jansma) Uittenbogaard, was born at Sheldon, Iowa on October 10,1921. He lived his youth and attended school in Sanborn.

On October 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Joan M. Colling at South Sioux City, Neb. and to this union three daughters were born. Scritch and Joan spent their entire married life in the Sanborn community where they owned and operated a bar for 31 years. Scritch passed away at the Veterans Hospital at Sioux Falls, S.D. on August 14, 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Sanborn; his daughters: Mrs. Thomas (Barbara), Kimmel of Sioux City, Ia., Mrs. Bill (Mary Ellen) Dunn of Sheldon, Ia., and Mrs. Orville (Kathy) Ginger of Primghar, Ia.; six grandchildren, four brothers: Harry Bogaard of Brooksville, Fla., John Uittenbogaard of Hospers, Ia., Donald Bogaard of Jacksonville, Fla. and Adrian Bogaard of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters: Mrs. Clarence (Ann) Ekdahl of Saugatuck, Mich., Mrs. John (Minnie) Martin of Boonesville, Mo. and Mrs. Kenneth (Phyllis) Snyder of Spirit Lake.

Scritch was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers. He was a 40-year member of the Sanborn Fire Department and a member of Earl T. Conaway Post No. 318 American Legion in Sanborn.

Funeral services were held August 17 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Sanborn with Rev. Keith Pals officiating. Casketbearers were Merle Alberts, Mike Dummett, Greg Vogelaar, John Vander Werff, Don Faas and Ed Visser. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn with Earl T. Conaway Post No. 318, American Legion in charge of the flag presentation.
