John Cornelius Brower (1851-1924)

John Cornelius Brower was born in Andike, Holland August 17, 1851 and passed away at his home in east Hartley May 19, 1924 after a long illness. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He reached the age of 72 years, 9 months and 2 days.

In the year of 1874 he was united in marriage with Martha Groot and three children were born to this union, John and Cornelius who survive him and Simon who died in infancy.

In 1878 his wife died and in 18S2 he was married to Tena Swier. This union was blessed with twelve children, six having preceded him in death.

In 1889 he immigrated with his family to the United States, settling at Orange City, Iowa, where they resided until 1900 when they moved to a farm near Hornick, Iowa. In the spring of 1911 they moved to a farm east of Hartley where they lived until the spring of 1919 when they moved to their present home in Hartley. About twenty-five years ago he united with the Seventh Day Adventist church of Orange City of which he remained a faithful member unto his death.

He was a kind and loving father and husband and enjoyed the full respect of a large circle of friends.

Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his death eight children, Cornelius of Sioux City, John of Armour, S. D., Peter, Gerrit, Edward and Richard, Mrs. Chas. Hons and Mrs. Dale Larkin, all of Hartley. Also 21 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the M. E. church in Hartley, Rev. Floyd Bresee of the Seventh Day Adventist church of Sioux City officiating, assisted by Rev. Fellows of the M. E. church of Hartley. Burial was made at the Sheldon cemetery.
