MRS. MARGARET OTTZEN (1870-1944)

Mrs. Margaret Ottzen, the daughter of John Dreessen and his wife Sophia, nee Zornig, was born on June 11, 1870 at Marne in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In 1891, she emigrated from her native land and came to Benton county, Iowa.

On October 5, 1892, she entered into the holy estate of matrimony with Christ Ottzen of Granville, Iowa. The ceremony was performed by Pastor Dreschler of Remsen. This union was blessed with three daughters, Hattie, Frieda, and Martha.

After their marriage the Ottzens lived south of Granville for a little over a year when they moved to a farm four miles south and one mile west of Paullina. In 1903 the Ottzen family established their permanent residence in the town of Paullina.

After a sickness of a few months, Mrs. Ottzen departed this life on Monday, May 11, at about 1:20 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Buddenhagen, near Aurelia, who had cared for her in her last illness. She reached the age of 73 years, 11 months and 11 days.

She leaves to mourn her parting: Her daughters Mrs. Hattie Meyer of Cleghorn, Iowa; Mrs. Frieda Lemke of Paullina and Mrs. Martha Buddenhagen of Aurelia; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. Albert Steffen of Paullina, and Mrs. Wm. Eggers of near Sioux Falls, S.D., and three brothers: Fred Dreessen of Paullina, Henry Dreessen of Pipestone, Minn., and Herman Dreessen of Sibley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Mary 24th at 2:00 from Zion Ev. Lutheran Church. Interment was made at the Paullina cemetery. Pastor Martin Peters officiated.
