Martin Puhrmann (1855-1915)

The deceased, Martin Puhrmann, was born Dec. 2, 1855 in Thelknow, Mecklinburg, Germany. in 1803 [sic] his friends came to this country with their entire family and settled at Homewood, Cook Co., Illinois. At that place Mr. Puhrman met Johanna Gerdes who became his wife on Oct. 21st, 1877. This union was blessed with nine children, four girls and five boys; one of the girls was called into eternity long before her parents.

In the spring of 1894 the family moved to O'Brien Co., Iowa, and in 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Puhrman retired from active farm life and moved to Paullina. Extreme sadness overcame the deceased in 1911 when on Aug 15 his wife was taken way from his side by death. Since that time he has spent most of his time in solitude, or alone.

He had always enjoyed the very best of health off of his life until a paralytic stroke overcome him on Aug 19th of this past summer. Since that time Mr. Puhrman was never again his real self. The last five weeks he spent in the hospital at Primghar where he fell asleep on Tuesday evening at 7:30. He attained the age of 70 years and 6 days.

His departure is mourned by his eight children and thier respective helpmates. 29 granddhildren, two brothers, one sister and a host of friends as well as more distant relatives. The children are: George Puhrmann, Louis Puhrmann. Alvin Puhrmann. Mrs. Anna Strampe and William Puhrmann, of Paullina, Iowa; Herman Puhrmann, of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Martha Stoever, of Hospers, Iowa, and Mrs. Frances Sylvester of Charles City, Iowa. The brothers are Carl Puhrmann of Homewood, Ill., Fred Puhrmann of Chicago, Ill. The sister is Mrs. William Vespe of Jet., Okla.
