Jacob Elgersma Buried Tuesday

Jacob Elgersma was born November 5, 1863, in the small village of Sweins, Friesland, The Netherlands, and passed away at Primghar, Iowa, December 8, 1944, at the age of 81 years, one month and three days.

Mr. Elgersma had been failing in health for several years and for the past few months he had been bedfast. After his wife's death last August 7, he had seemed to give up and his strength failed rapidly. Two weeks ago he was taken to a nursing home in Primghar for care and there he passed away just three months and one day after his wife's death.

Mr. Elgersma was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Duimstra on November 17, 1888 in The Netherlands. Two years later they came to the United States, settling at Grand Rapids, Mich., where they lived for 11 years. They then came to Iowa and resided in Sioux county for ten years, when they came to the Sanborn community. They lived for seven years on the Chas. Burns farm south of town and in 1918 moved to town into a home south of the tracks. Six years ago they purchased a home on west Third Street, near their church, the Christian Reformed, of which both were faithful members. Mrs. Elgersma was afflicted with arthritis for a number of years and had to use crutches in getting about. Even though Mr. Elgersma's eyesight and general health had failed greatly the last years, they were able to keep up their home and were happy in it until death parted them.

Eight children were born to their union, all of whom survive to bless the memory of loving Christian parents. They are: Pete, of Sanborn; Harry J., Waupun, Wisc.; Gertrude, Mrs. Jake Haagsma Sr., and Maggie, Mrs. Jake Andringa, both of Sanborn; Mrs. Florence Andringa, Alton; John, Sanborn; Ernest J., Hartley; Alyce, Mrs. Ed Boone, Sanborn. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one brother, William of Sanborn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock at the family home and at 1:30 in the Christian Reformed church with the Rev. R.J. Bos in charge. Casket bearers were six grandsons: Dick Haagsma, Jake Haagsma, Jr., Jake Andringa, Jr., Fred, Andringa, Jake M. Elgersma and Claarence Klaver, the same ones who acted in that capacity at Mrs. Elgersma's funeral. He was laid to rest in Roseland Cemetery.
