NICK ELGERSMA DIES AT HOME IN HARTLEY SUNDAY

Funeral Services Held From Christian: Reformed Church in Sanborn

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home at Hartley, Iowa, at 1 o'clock and was followed by services at the Christian Reformed church at Sanborn, at 2 o'clock with the local pastor, Rev B. Someren conducting the services, for Nick Elgersma who departed this life at the age of 72 years at the home of his daughter, Mrs Fred Jansma on Sunday, Oct. 18, 1933.
Burial was made in Roseland cemetery at Sanborn, with his six nephews, Harry W., Sam, Ray, Pete, Harry J., and Ernest Elgersma serving as pall bearers.

Nick Elgersma was born in 1861 in Freeseland, Netherlands, where he resided during the first 29 years of his life.

He was united in marriage to Miss Hattie DeBoer in 1888 and two years later the couple came to America, first settling at Grand Rapids, Mich., where he was employed in a furniture factory until 1903. He terminated a residency of 13 years in Michigan and later moved his family to Northwest Iowa, settling near Sheldon, and taking up farming.

Since 1903, the family home has been maintained in the county in which time the deceased acquired a wide acquaintance and enjoyed a large circle of friends and was honored and respected for his upright character and sterling qualities. He was affiliated with the Christian Reformed church in which he took a deep interest.

About a year ago the family moved from Sheldon to Sanborn and occupied the residence owned by their son, Menzo Elgersma, on West Third street. The past week the family moved to Hartley to reside with a daughter, Mrs. Fred Jansma. Six of the seven children born to them; Harry N. and Ernest N. of Sanborn, and four daughters, Mrs. Fred Jansma of Hartley, Mrs. Maggie Ten Kley who resides in Minnesota, Mrs. Henry Buysma and Mrs. James Buysma of Melvin, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Bert Jacobsman, also of Melvin, and the widow, survive.

Immediate relatives surviving are two brothers, Jake and William Elgersma of Sanborn, and one brother and a sister who reside in the Netherlands. One son, Menzo Elgersma, preceded him in death last December.
