Zaidee McCullow
Miss Zaidee McCullow, 82, and a resident of Sanborn for 77 years, passed away at the Memorial hospital at Sheldon, Friday, June 5, where she was taken following a stroke suffered on Sunday, May 31.
Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home Monday, June 8, at 2:00 p.m.. Rev. Robert. Baxter, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Mrs Harold Saupe sang "No Night There" and "Abide With Me" accompanied by Mrs Ethelyn Stevens at the piano. Mrs Frank Johnson and Mr and Mrs Albert Parker were in charge of the flowers. Casket bearers were: Harold Saupe, Kenneth Tifft, C. E. Helnsen, Kenneth Kuyper, Wilbur Smith and Ralph Herberts. Interment was In Roseland Cemetery.
Zaidee McCullow, daughter of George N. McCullow and Mary A Gray McCullow, was born January 17, 1877, at Mason City, Iowa. Her father was an employee of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, and to be more convenient to his work the family moved to Austin, Minn., then to Calmar, Iowa, and in 1882, when Zaidee was five years of age, they moved to Sanborn and this has been her home ever since. She received her education in the Sanborn Public School and the Business School of Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where she was a student during the school year 1895-96.
Miss McCullow was always interested in community life and took part in many of the town activities. She was a past member of Dorothy Chamber Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, at Sanborn, being a charter member and held several offices including that of Regent. When that chapter gave up its charter,' she with other members transferred to Mary Ball Washington Chapter at Sheldon. For a number of years she was a member of Mary Tifft Rebekah lodge here and held offices including that of Noble Grand. She was also a member of the Twentieth Century Club, joining in its early years and served as its president as well as several other offices in that organization. Miss McCullow was best known in later years to folks in the Community in her position as libarian at the Sanborn Public Library, which she managed efficiently and faithfully for 38 years. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club when, in 1901, they started the public library with 50 donated books in a small corner of a store on Main Street. She did her part in this work, taking a turn in tending the library, when the ladies of the club were doing the work themselves. Later the town assumed the support of the library and in 1918 she became the librarian continuing until she resigned in 1956 due to failinc health. She was also a member of the" library board.
She was a member of Coral Chapter No. 41, Order of Eastern Star which she joined in 1903 and held the offices of Adah, Electa, Treasurer, Conductress, Associate Matron and Worthy Matron and was in the latter office at the time the Masonic Temple was begun in 1925. At a joint meeting of O.E.S. and Masons on January 5, 1954, Miss McCullow was honored for her 50 years of membership and presented a 50 year jewel and certificate. She was also active in Red Cross work during the war. Miss McCullow was a member of the Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George N. McCullow in 1920, Mary McCullow in 1928, one sister, Cora Mary in 1880, and 'two brothers, Fred R. TBen] in 1936, and Clayton E. in 1957. There are no immediate survivors

Her life was earnest, her actions kind, a generous hand, and an active mind, anxious to please, loath to offend, a loving person and a faithful friend.
