1910 — 1999

Herman DeYoung, the son of John and Katherine (Muilenburg) DeYoung, was born at Sanborn, Iowa on November 4. 1910. He lived his youth and received his education at Sanborn. He served his country in the United States Army from January 22.1942 to August 7. 1945.

He was united in marriage to Loretta Kirlin on March 10, 1949 at Hartley, Iowa. Herman and Babe owned and operated "Dee's Ice Cream Store" for a number of years. He served as a custodian at Hartley Community School from 1955 to 1973. He also was employed part-time at Treimer's Insurance, from 1963 to 1988.

He died at Mann Memorial Wing at Hartley, Iowa on July 19,1999 at the age of 88 years, eight months and 15 days. He is survived by four brothers: John of Melvin. Robert of Yucaipa, Calif., Vernon of San Diego, Calif., and Glen of Sierra Vista, Ariz.: two sisters: Jeanette Graham of Sanborn, la., and Dorothy Snider of Spirit Lake, la.; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers: Marvin and James, and one sister, Wilma Raymond.

Herman was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ at Hartley. Iowa and the Hartley American Legion Post No. 288. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and golf. He is also remembered as an excellent dancer.

Funeral services were held at Trinity United Church of Christ at Hartley on July 21 vAtii Milo Sheldon officiating. Casket bearers were Lanny DeYoung, Don Kroese, Jerry Raymond and Thomas Raymond. Congregational hymns were "Abide With Me," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Mrs. Helen DeGraaf was organist. Military graveside rites were conducted by Hartley American Legion Post No. 288 with burial In Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley. The Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
