Mrs. Mary Dummett

Funeral services were held at two o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal Church for Mrs. Mary Dummett. Rev. Ernest Stanworth officiated and was assisted by Rev. A.C. Grafton, pastor of the Presbyterian church. During the service hour, a quartette composed of Mesdames Bert Merriam, H. O. Davis and Messers C. D. Barber and Rev. Stanworth, rendered a number of vocal selections. Miss Gladys Barber accompanied at the piano.

Mary A. Daly was born August 19, 1849, in New York state, and departed this life at her home in Sanborn, Iowa, February 9, 1932, at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days. At an early age, she lost her father and a few months later moved to Iowa with her mother, settling in Benton county. Here the early years of her girlhood were spent and here she attended the public schools and received her education.

In 1809, when 20 years of age, she was married to William H. Dummett. To this union ten children wore born, five of whom are deceased. The remaining ones are two daughters, Mrs. Frank Merrill, Minneapolis, and Mrs William Brahan, Sanborn, and three sons, Elmer, of Sanborn; Henry, of Bingham Lake, Minn., and George, of Los Angeles, Calif. With the exception of the son who resides in California, all the children were present at the services.

Sixty years ago, the tide of immigration brought the deceased and her husband to O'Brien county. They took up a homestead in Franklin township in 1872. and resided there continuously for 43 years. There they built their pioneer home and endured the hardships of many long, cold, snowy winters and the droughts and grasshopper scourges, which laid to waste crop after crop during those years. With great courage aud fortitude, the early years of privation and suffering —the common lot of early settlers — were passed over and with the advance of time, the pioneer residence became one of the fine farms in the locality, through the efforts and industry of its owners.

After the death of her husband, which occurred in 1915, the deceased purchased a home in town, where she has resided for the last 17 years. Grandma Dummett, as she was lovingly called, was of a quiet disposition and up to a few months ago, previous to her last illness, performed her household duties and conducted her business affairs. On her 80th birthday anniversary, a family reunion was held at her home. At that time, 33 of the 55 lineal descendants were present to help observe that day.

She was a faithful attendant at the Methodist church in which she took an active interest and very generously supported.

Interment was made in the family lot at Roseland cemetery beside those of her family, who preceded her in death.

She was borne to her final resting place by her six grandsons, Glenn, Vern, Emery, Donald Dummett and Earl Brahan who served as pall bearers.

The lovely floral tributes and the large concourse of friends, who gathered to pay their final respect and love, spoke of the high place the deceased held in this community.

Out of town relatives in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Merrill and daughter, Iva of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dummett and daughter, Berdine, of Bingham Lake, Minn.
