OBITUARY

Roy H. Ebel, son of Walter and Clara Hoppe Ebel, was born July 12, 1924, in Murray County near Iona, MN. He attended country school in Murray County, MN, until Nov. 1, 1934, when he moved with his parents to the Ebel farm in Caledonia Township, O'Brien County, Iowa. Roy attended St. John Lutheran School in Germantown. He worked for various farmers in the Germantown area.

On January 4, 1944, he was inducted into the Army serving with the 134th Infantry of the 5th Division. He was taken prisoner by the Germans on Sept. 11, 1944, in France, and was a prisoner of war of eight months being liberated on May 2,1945, by the American forces. Roy was discharged in November of 1945.

On June 1, 1948, he was united in marriage to Shirley Rehder. The couple farmed east of Paullina until 1958 when they moved to the Ebel farm near Germantown where they raised a large family and lived there until they retired and moved into Paullina in 1984.

He passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar after being stricken at his home, reaching the age of 76 years and one day.

He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Iona, MN, and later confirmed on April 10, 1938, at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, where he had been a member for many years. He was a member of the Russell West Post of the American Legion, which he was past Commander, was a member of the American Ex. Prisoners of War, the Silver and Gold, served on the Farmers Co-Op Board, Rural Electric Board, and had served on the Paullina City Council. He was active in his church, serving in many different offices of the church and the Zion-St. John Lutheran School.

Roy leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley of Paullina; two sons and their wives: Steven and Ronda Ebel of Paullina and Scott and Kelly Ebel of Murrieta, CA; five daughters: Jean and her husband, Jim Gnade of Paullina, Julie Shanklin of Omaha, NE, Joyce and her husband, Dan Hetletvedt of Granville, Sally and her husband, Tim Kraayenbrink "of Fort Dodge, JA, and Sheryl and her husband, Dan Paskevic of Omaha, NE; 21 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; three sisters: Mrs. Velma Dau and Mrs. Clara Sickelka of Sutherland and Mrs. Lillian Lage of Detroit Lakes, MN; and two brothers: Harry Ebel of Paullina and Don Ebel of Sutherland; also a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen and Bernice.

Services held for Roy H. Ebel

Funeral services for Roy H. Ebel were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Hayden officiating. "How Great Thou Art," "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives" were sung by the congregation. The organist was Mrs. Linda Brockmann. The honorary casket bearers were Brenda Kruse, Holli Gerstandt, Jill Gnade, Jana Gnade, Theresa Gnade, Andrea Shanklin, Alyssa Shanklin, Kassi Hetletvedt, Kami Hetletvedt, Knssa Hetlervedt, Jacy Kraayen-brink, Taylor Kraayenbrink, Ben Kraayenbrink, Chelsey Ebel, Jordan Ebel, Chloe Ebel, Bailey Paskevic and Mason Paskevic. The casket bearers were Joel Gnade, Bret Ebel, Korey Kruse, Jeff Gnade, Anthony Ebel and Joe Gerstandt. Military Graveside Services were conducted by Russell West Post of the American Legion of Paullina. Interment was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Germantown, Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.
