Bessie Mae Martin, the daughter
of Isaac and Lillie Brower
Gibbs, was born August 11, 1897,
at Cornelia, Georgia.

She came to Iowa as a young girl and was
married to Albert Martin at Sioux,
City, Iowa. She had lived in the
Sutherland, Iowa area all her life.

She worked as a cook for the
Sutherland School from 1950 until
1962, and was a member of the
Church of Christ at Sutherland.
For the last few years, she had .
made her home with two of her
daughters, Mary Lou and Betty.

She passed away at the hospital
in Hartley, Iowa, on July 28, 1984, •
at the age of 86.

Preceding her in
death were her parents, three
brothers, Albert, Arthur and Edgar,
one sister, Ethel, three
grandchildren and one son, Daniel.

Left to cherish her memory are
four daughters and their husbands,
Mary Lou and Merritt
Henderson of Park Rapids, Minnesota,
Laura and William Wolter of
Modesto, California, Nellie and
Norman Meyer of Paullina, and
Betty and Paul Winter of Buffalo
Center, Iowa; three sons and their
wives, Pat and Dorothy of Sutherland,
Burton and Carolyn and
Paul and Marcine, all of Cedar
Rapids, Iowa; thirty-one grandchildren;
twenty-nine great grandchildren;
three sisters, Ruth Hawkins
of Kingsley, Iowa, Nell Hardy
of Seattle, Washington, and Nettie
Gibbs of Kingsley; as well as other
relatives and friends.
