1936–2012

Jim Coomes, 78, Clearlake, CA, formerly of Sheldon, died Tuesday, May 1, at St. Helena Hospital in the northern California town of St. Helena. A memorial service will be held
at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Jim Coomes was born in 1936 in Sheldon, Iowa, to parents Charlotte "Chug" and Roy Coomes. After completing high school in 1954, he attended the University of Iowa for two years, transferring to the University of South Dakota to complete his bachelor of arts degree. Jim then
moved to Denver, Colorado, to work for the city and county of Denver Welfare Department.
He remained in Denver until 1968, when he moved to Southern California, then to the San Francisco area, and finally to Clearlake, CA. There he completed a threeyear course in the theological field and entered the ministry, as well as working for Catholic Charities in Lake
County. Jim was an accomplished pianist who enjoyed playing in saloons, churches and
everything in between. Later in life, he also mastered the electric keyboard and organ and was in high demand for many public functions and charitable events.

Jim is survived by a brother, Larry Coomes, who resides in Tucson, Arizona.
