James Peter "Jim" Statema was born on November 11, 1944 to John and Gertrude (Sneller) Statema in Hull, Iowa. He grew up in Hull, Iowa attending school there and then moved to rural Hull to work on the farm with his cousin, Hank Sneller until he joined the United States Army. He served two years in the army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He joined the Minnesota National Guard and later transferred to the Iowa National Guard in Sheldon, Iowa. He enjoyed his time in the Guard where he was a cook and retired after 28 years.
He was married to Carol Vander Bok on June 19, 1968 in Rock Valley, where they lived for a short time and then moved to George, Iowa. He worked at Campbell Soup in Worthington, Minnesota. They then moved to Sheldon when he became employed at Postema Masonry & Construction. After that job he worked at Packerland in Hospers, Iowa until the plant closed. He then worked for De Kruif Disposal in Sheldon until he retired. Jim passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Sheldon Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 67 years, 2 months and 9 days.
He was a member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and of the Sheldon American Legion. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards, camping, fishing and watching football. He loved to have people over for a meal so he could cook for them.
Jim leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years, Carol; their daughters, Shelli Statema of Sheldon, Iowa and Janell and her husband Roger Garrett of Ireton, Iowa; a sister, Carol and her husband, Charles "Red" Bowen of Sanborn, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Sandi and her husband, Bob Olson of Hopkins, Minnesota; he is also survived by his nephews, nieces and their children, cousins, lots of friends and coffee drinking buddies.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
