Lewis Martin Succumbs at Hartley: Funeral Held on Saturday
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Baumgarten Funeral Home for Lewis A. Martin, 72, resident of the Sutherland community for 64 years, who died Thursday afternoon at the Reed Nursing Home at Hartley. Rev. L. W. Rowse, pastor of the Methodist church had charge of the services. Mrs. Phillip Jordan, with accompaniment by Mrs. Otis Hulser, sang "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee". Pallbearers were U. C. McCormack, Claud Mason, Herbert Robinson, Will Brady, Herbert Collier and Alfred Wittrock. Mrs. Alfred Wittrock and Mrs. Herbert Collier had charge of the flowers. Interment was in Waterman cemetery.

Lewis A. Martin, son of Alexander and Kate Martin, was born May 10, 1876 at Peterson, Iowa. He passed away on October 7, 1948, at Hartley, Iowa, having reached the age of 72 years, 4 months and 27 days.
His entire life was spent in this locality. Moving with his parents to Sutherland from Peterson in 1894 [sic, 1884], at the age of 8 years, he attended the public schools, and high school at Sutherland. He farmed near Sutherland until 1941, and 6 years ago, in failing health, entered the Reed Nursing Home, Hartley. He resided there until the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and brother. Surviving are three brothers, Lawrence, and Jasper of Sutherland, Charles of Cherokee; four sisters, Rose (Mrs. Will Watson) of Three Hills, Alberta, Canada; Jane (Mrs. Ed Parks) of Hemet, California; Ethel (Mrs. Lloyd Parker) of Recede, California; and Alta (Mrs. Arthur Cullman) of Fort Dodge, Iowa, besides many other relatives and friends.
