Mrs. Walter Burns Succumbs Monday; Funeral Wednesday

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Baumgarten Funeral Home for Mrs. Walter Burns, who passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Bert Hilton, at Cherokee, Monday morning. Rev. L. W. Rowse, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge of the services. Mrs. Phillip Jordan, with accompaniment by Mrs. Otis Hulser, sang "In the Sweet By and Bye" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were A. H. Schultz, R. Clifton, Everett Olhausen, Math Noethe, Gus Gottsch and Harold Gottsch. Mrs. Noethe and Mrs. Everett Olhausen had charge of the flowers. Interment was in Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee. Mrs. Burns had been a resident of Sutherland for 39 years. She had gone to Cherokee two weeks ago to attend a funeral when she suffered a stroke and after a week's illness, succumbed on Monday.

1876 - Mrs. Walter Burns - 1948

Mrs. Walter Burns (nee Eunice Jane Wilson) was born at Mt. Vernon, Illinois, on December 12, 1876, the daughter of George and Caroline Wilson. She passed away at Cherokee, Iowa, September 27, 1948, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 15 days. Her early girlhood was spent near her birthplace. At the age of 8 years she moved to Cherokee County, Iowa. It was there she attended public school.

Her marriage to Noah Walter Burns took place on March 5, 1896, at Cherokee. To them were born three children: Robert, Frank and Lyle. They lived in and near Larrabee for some time, moving to Sutherland 39 years ago. Mrs. Burns was a member of the Methodist church and of the Rebekah Lodge.

Having been seriously ill for about a week, she passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Burt Hilton, at Cherokee. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1944, and son, Lyle, in 1947. Left to mourn her passing are her two sons: Robert, of Gaza, and Frank of Collinsville, Ill., two sisters, Mrs. Bert Hilton of Cherokee, and Mrs. Herman Schmall of Sioux City; three brothers, Frank of Sedalia, Missouri, Gale and Leo, both of Sioux City, other relatives, and many friends.
