EDGERTON, MN Esther Hoekstra, 90, Edgerton, MN, formerly of Sheldon, died Monday, Oct. 4, at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton.
Services were Friday, Oct. 8, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton, MN. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home in Edgerton, MN.
Esther Hoekstra, daughter of Klaas and Tryntje (Wibben) Vander Pol, was born Dec. 22,
1919, near Archer. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Colton, SD, where they lived for about three years. Her mother and a 9-month-old baby sister, Hilda, died in January 1923
while living in Colton, SD.
Shortly after, the family moved back to the Sheldon area, where her father married Jennie (Meinders) Dykstra. She grew up with her two brothers, one sister and two step-siblings.
She attended Sheldon Christian School and sent her adolescent years in the Sheldon area helping with the farm work and working various places.
She married Marinus Hoekstra on Dec. 6, 1939 at the home of her parents in Sheldon. They lived for 59 years near Sheldon, Sanborn and Edgerton, MN, where they farmed until retirement in 1975. Mr. Hoekstra died Jan. 19, 1999. She remained in their home in Edgerton, MN, until 2004, when she moved to Edgebrook Apartments in Edgerton, MN. She became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center in 2008.
She was a constant companion to her husband, helping on the farm and keeping busy with her family She loved handiwork such as quilting and crocheting, and loved fishing and gardening. She loved the family get togethers at the park in Edgerton and at Christmas which were annual family events. She enjoyed the challenge of word games. She was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton, MN. She taught Sunday School and was a Bible study leader Her life was a testimonial to her family of her faith in God.
Survivors include seven children, Calvin and Pat Hoekstra of Edgerton, MN, Wilma and Don Vande Berg of Sioux Center, Theora and Nickolas Ver Steeg of Hancock, MN, Evelyn and Marlin Baas of Morris, MN, Ronald and Cher Hoekstra of Rockford, IL, Ruth and Denny Graber of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mary Schaefer of Sioux Falls, SD; 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 16 great~grand children; and one stepgreat grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marinus Hoekstra; a daughter, Joan Pearl; a grands~~ Kevin Hoekstra; two brothers, Jerry Vander Pol ~and Gerrit Vander P01; two sisters, Tillie Vander Pol and Hilda VanderPol in infancy; a step brother, Tim Dykstra; and stepsister, Jennie Haley
