Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, prior to the Memorial Service, at the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon..
Laura Euphema Groot, daughter of Fletcher and Cecile (Wilcox) King, was born September 5, 1926 in Moville, Iowa. She received her education in several schools in West Central and Northwest Iowa as the family moved frequently with road construction work, etc. Laura was united in marriage to Marion Groot on May 24, 1944, in Storm Lake at the Assemblies of God parsonage.. After their marriage, Marion and Laura lived in Sheldon where they farmed the family farm on Highway 18 on the edge of Sheldon. In 1954 they built Hiway Dairy, a business they operated until 1966. Later, Marion operated Groot’s Repair and constructed many houses in Sheldon. Laura was always the bookkeeper for the family businesses. She passed away at home on November 11, 2009, as the result of cancer, reaching the age of 83 years, 2 months and 6 days.
Laura’s life centered on her family and the family businesses, her church, missions work, and traveling. She was a member of Parkview Assembly (formerly the Sheldon Gospel Tabernacle) since 1943. She held several positions as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Women’s Ministries Director, and pianist. For 24 years Laura and Marion wintered in Roma, Texas in order to help with Bethel Mission near the border. For 7 years they wintered in Kerrville, Texas to help at a camp and the Salvation Army.
From early marriage, Laura and Marion owned trailers or motorhomes and traveled extensively throughout the United States—including 3 times to Alaska—and Canada and Mexico. Their daughter, Trudy, and husband, Ken, are missionaries, and Laura and Marion were able to visit them in Brussels, Belgium in 1979 and in Tanzania, East Africa in 1984.
Laura was an exemplary wife, mother, and grandmother. She was always busy sewing clothes for herself and Trudy, doll clothes for the granddaughters, baby layettes that were sent to help poor mothers, and quilt tops to be tied and sent to missions organizations. Laura desired that all of her activities bring glory to her Lord and Savior.
Laura leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Marion of Sheldon; daughter Trudy and her husband Ken of Springfield, Missouri; two granddaughters and husbands: Heidi and Jeff Gilboy of Cloquet, Minnesota, and Heather and Sean McGee of Round Rock, Texas; and six great-grandchildren: Malaika, Abby, Laura, Aiden, and Ivy Gilboy and Kian McGee. Laura is also survived by her sisters Ruth Kelly of Sioux City, Iowa and Fern and Steve Larson of Evansville, Wisconsin; a brother Melvin and Jean King of Moville, Iowa; sisters-in-law Dorothy Vanderburg of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, and Katherine Mouw and Shirley Groot of Sheldon, Iowa; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She will be deeply missed by her family, church, neighbors, and the friends they met in their travels.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Lilva Harmes, a brother Fletcher King, a sister-in-law, 6 brothers-in-law, and 3 nephews.
