Karen Mae Smith was born on June 9, 1943, in Pierson, Iowa. She was the daughter of Melvin and Ella (Funderman) Gano. She lived her youth in Sanborn, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from high school. She served in the United States Marine Corp and was honorably discharged in August of 1962.
She was united in marriage to Gordon Smith of Sheldon, Iowa, on January 19, 1969. They lived in rural Sheldon.
Karen was a member of Parkview Assembly of God Church in Sheldon.
She enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, and traveling to California and Kansas, with Gordon, to visit family. Karen enjoyed the life God gave her.
She passed away on Monday, November 15, 2010, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband: Gordon Smith of Sheldon, IA; one son: Joe and Kathie Sobiniak of Bakersfield, CA; one daughter: Rebecca and Jason Schwarz of Sheldon, IA; two step-children: Steve and Angie Smith of Sheldon, IA, Peggy and Robert Jager of Ashton, IA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Gaylen and Carol Gano of Vancover, WA, Raymond and Doris Gano of Oklahoma, Edward and Betty Gano of Worthington, MN; six sisters: Elfay and Bob Merical of Allendorf, IA, Virginia and Dick Eastman of Stockton, CA, Kay & Lloyd Dolphin of Hospers, IA, Beverly and Roger Jensen of Sheldon, IA, Sandra and Dennis Farnsworth of Dublin, GA, Cindy McParland of Sanborn, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, grandson, stepson, brother and sister.
