Marie Stapf, age 89, of Sheldon Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon.
Marie Ethyln (Hemenway) Stapf was born on March 21, 1921, in Castle Rock, Minnesota, to Hazel (Cowell) and Benjamin Hemenway. She spent her childhood in Castle Rock and Farmington where she attended school. She loved playing basketball.
She was united in marriage to William Jacob Stapf, in Prescott, Wisconsin, on September 27, 1937. They made their home in Farmington where they had three daughters, Sharon (Sherry), Marlene and Marlys (twins).
After farming for a few years, they went on the road traveling all over the United States, moving every few months, building wood and cement grain elevators, during the years from 1943 to 1977, over 220 jobs in 180 towns in 22 states. They moved to Sheldon, Iowa in 1956 and called it home, living in several homes that they built. In 1983, they built the earth home on 16th street, where they lived until 2009, when they entered the nursing home.
Marie was a homemaker, waitress and bookkeeper. She was an artist and enjoyed painting beautiful pictures. She also enjoyed handiwork, crocheting afghans and sweaters, playing the piano, organ and accordion.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon.
Marie was a devoted and loving wife of 73 years, a mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Left to cherish her memories includes her husband: William (Bill) Stapf; daughters: Sherry Vander Pol of Sheldon, IA, Marlene Postma and husband Richard of Sheldon, IA; one sister: Ardis Van Wychen of Faribault, MN; one brother: Alvin Hemenway and wife Ethel of Medina, MN; 8 Grandchildren; 19 Great-Grandchildren; 5 Great-Great-Grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Hazel and Ben Hemenway; a daughter: Marlys and her husband Jack Sachen; a granddaughter: Pamela (Peterson) Schwebach; two sons-in-law: Albert L. Peterson Jr. and Gerard (Jerry) Vander Pol.
