Electa Hughes 1899 - 1977

Funeral Services for Mrs. Electa M. Hughes, lifetime resident of the Primghar Communtiy, were held on Monday, Sept. 26, 1977 at 10:00 a. m. in the United Chruch of Primghar (Methodist) with Pastor John Saxton officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Primghar.
Pallbearers were Charles Hughes, Randy Hughes, John Hughes, Dennis Hughes, David Hughes, Rick Hughes, Ronald Jago, James Jago, John Jago, Mark Goodrich and Alan Carlsborg. "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden" were sung by Ardis Barnholdt and Barbara Craun. Eva Weseman was the organist.
Mrs. Hughes died at the Memorial Hospital on Sept. 22. She had been a resident of the Mann Memorial Wing for 10 1/2 months following a severe stroke suffered on Sept 13, 1976. She suffered this stroke following a number of operations over the previous 18 months in a vain attempt to regain her health.
Electa was born on Jan. 22, 1899 on a farm in Highland Twp., the daughter of Wm. T. Hardin and Lucretia (Fisher) Hardin. She attended the rural schools in Highland Twp. and entered the Primghar High School in 1912. She graduated in 1916 and was president of her class in her senior year. Following graduation she taught school in the rural schools of O'Brien County for 3 years. Later attended N.B.T. in Sioux City, Iowa. On Dec. 27, 1919 she married Clark D. Hughes, a high school classmate. Following their marriage they lived for 3 years in Ames, Ia. Clark was a student at Iowa State, Electa was sec. for Dean Buthanan.
Seven children, Rodney, Audrey (Goodrich), Royce, Reece, Robert, Ardyce (Jago), Alycia (Carlsborg), 22 grandchildren, 11 boys, 11 girls, and 11 great grandchildren. Took in a homeless boy of 14 and saw to his education. Memeber of Methodist Church, leader in 4H, talented culinary artist, member of Primghar Federated Women's Clubs, chairwoman at one time. Helped set up United Fund, member of American Legion Aux., serving as chairwoman for both the local unit and the county. Active in forming the Rosedale Club of Dale Twp. 1963 her friends and neighbors nominated her to represent them in the Iowa Mother of the year program. In the state she was elelcted as outstanding mother of the year for the seventh district (N.W. Iowa) and was featured in the Des Moines Sunday Register. She remained active in the State Mother of the Year Association until her hospitalization. Served as Republican Committee Woman for Dale Twp. for many years.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents. Also her husband's parents who loved her as their own daughter. She is survived by her husband, Clark D. Hughes, all her children, 22 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Verna Bland of Primghar and a host of friends.
