Memorial services for Vernon S. Flinders on Thursday morning, June 20, 1974, at Sacred Heart Church in Sutherland were held at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Father Don C. Ries, officiating.

Music was by Sacred Heart choir; the organist, Mrs. Joe Sweeney. Ushers were Ray Brechwald and Mike Mathern. Bearers were David Kanellis, Mike Kanellis, James Flinders, Samuel Flinders, Patrick Flinders and Michael Flinders.

Military services at the graveside were conducted by the American Legion Post, No. 152 of Sutherland, Iowa, Merle Haye, Commander.

The rosary was Wednesday, June 19, at 9:00 p.m. at Baumgarten Funeral Home, Sutherland, Iowa

Vernon Samuel Flinders, son of Samuel and Mary Dek Flinders, was born at Sutherland, Iowa, April 14, 1895. He was educated in Sutherland schools and later attended Morningside College in Sioux City.

He was united in marriage at Sutherland to Eleanor Sweeney on June 24, 1925. To this union were born three children. He was a lifelong resident of the Sutherland community, living on his farm north of town.

He was a veteran of World War I, having entered the service of his country July 23, 1918, at Primghar, Iowa, and served as a Private First Class with the Casual Detachment of the 1246 Demob. Group in Co L 23rd Infantry. He served wit the Army overseas from September 19, 1918 until August 3, 1919. He received his Honorable discharge at Camp Dodge on August 14, 1919.

He was a member of the American Legion, Post 152.

He served on the Sutherland School board for 25 years

He passed away at his home on June 17, 1974, at the age of 79 years, two months and three days. Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son; one sister, Verla Flinders; and one brother, Arthur Flinders.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife; a son, James, and his wife, Shirley (Hoy) of Sutherland; a daughter, Mrs. David(Marilynn) Kanellis of Iowa City; ten grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
