Mrs. Maria Triplett Passes Away at 97
Holiday joy was clouded when it became known that the life of Mrs. Maria Triplett, oldest resident in the community and county, had come to an end. One of Mrs. Triplett's desires had been to live to be 100 years old and but for a fall in October she might have attained that desire, as her health had been good up to that time. She celebrated her 97th birthday on Memorial Day, 1938.The Tripletts were pioneer residents of Waterman township, having moved onto the Triplett farm now occupied by grandson, James Triplett, in 1883, just a year after the town of Sutherland was founded, and their lives and the growth of this community have been closely linked through the years.
Funeral services were held from the Church of Christ Saturday afternoon with Rev. H.D. Platt, pastor of the church, reading the scripture, obituary and poem honoring the deceased, and offering prayer and Rev A.A. Howe of the Methodist church preaching the sermon. H.J. Behmer and Miss Jean Nott, with Miss Eleanor Briggs at the piano, sang appropriate music.
Interment was in the family lot in Waterman Cemetery.
Six grandsons of the deceased Merritt, Edward, James, Amos, Blaine and Harold Triplett, acted as pallbearers.

The oldest and one of the most respected citizens of Sutherland left us on December 29. It was most fitting that one in the winter time of age should take her departure in the winter season of the year for Maria Priscilla Sellers-Triplett would have been 98 years of age on May 30, 1939. She was born in Thompsontown, Penn., on May 30, 1841, from which place her family moved when she was 14 to Wyanet Bureau county, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Amos Triplett of Princeton, Ill., on Oct 28, 1857, and lived there for ten years. In 1867 they were urged westward by the pioneering spirit and came to Marshall county, Iowa, in a covered wagon. Sixteen years later in 1883, they mirgrated to O'Brien county, where they began farming on a place now farmed by a grandson, James Triplett. They remained on the farm until 1901, at which time they moved into Sutherland and from their home here Mr. Triplett preceeded her in death April 20, 1923.
Mrs. Triplett had continued in good health and physical activity until a fall on October 29th of this year, which resulted in her being confined to her bed until her passing.
