Hulda Lora Catherine Westphal, born Dec. 15, 1894, was the only daughter of John Westphal and Regina Kloock Westphal of this city. She grew up to young womanhood in this community and in her 19th year married Mr. Wm. Proehl, also of this community. After her marriage to Mr. Proehl she became a member of Zion Lutheran church at this place, being confirmed by Rev. A. H. Semmann, now of Waterloo, Iowa. She received holy baptism in her infancy from Rev. C. D. Unoffer, then resident pastor of the Mill Creek church, now of Ireton, Iowa. Their family life was most happy, though not without hardships and trouble.
Surviving her are eight children, her husband, parents and one brother, Carl. In the midst of her daily labors she was suddenly stricken with pneumonia and other complications. She was taken to the hospital at Primghar and competent hands gave her all the care that was humanly possible, but the sickness was too severe for earthly skill. She succumbed on Friday morning, March 6, at the age of 36 years, 2 months and 21 days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Lutheran church, and interment was made at the local cemetery. A large concourse of friends followed her remains to their last resting place and many beautiful floral gifts were offered.
