Dean Beerman and John Hattermann Are Killed in One Car Accident Early Sunday morning.
Tragedy struck the Paullina community early Sunday morning when two well-liked Paullina teenagers were killed in a one car accident approximately 7 miles south of Paullina on blacktop L48.
Dean Alvin Beermann and John W. Hattermann were killed as the 1967 Ford driven by Mr. Beermann struck the bridge on the blacktop. According to the accident report, the vehicle was traveling north and traveled a short distance on the right shoulder of the roadway before striking the bridge. The vehicle then caught on fire. The car remained on the roadway. There was no indication that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Both young men were dead at the scene.
Joint services
Joint funeral services for Dean A. Beermann, 19, and John W. Hattermann, 17, were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Paullina High School gymnasium. Rev. Charles Kramer of St. John's Lutheran Church in Germantown officiated at the services. Burial was in St. John's cemetery near Germantown.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Schuknecht sang two hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". The congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Mrs. Clarence Hibbing was organist.
Pallbearers for Dean Beermann were David Tesch, Daniel Tesch, Steve Burmakow, Donald Beermann, Donald P. Krier and Paul Van Egdom. Usher was James Hoppe and chauffer was Donald Krier.
Pallbears for John Hattermann were Daniel Stamer, David Koehlmoos, Dan Hohback, Lynford Dau, Steve Wallin and Kent Wallin. David Richter served as usher.
Dean Alvin Beermann
Mr. Beermann was born Feb. 21, 1959 at Paullina. He attended schoool there and graduated from Paullina High School in 1977 and from Northwest Iowa Technical College at Sheldon. He was employed as a mechanic at Krier Motors in Paullina and was a member of St. John's Church at Germantown.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Beermann of Paullina; two sisters, Lori and Terri, both at home; his maternal grandfather, Fritz Runge of Calumet; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Irene Beermann of Paullina.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Beermann, who passed away in 1971.
John W. Hattermann
Mr. Hattermann was born June 7, 1961 at Paullina. He was a senior at Paullina High School and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Orphie) Hattermann of Paullina; two brothers, Donald and James, both of Paullina and four sisters, Mrs. Terry (Dorothy) Johnson of Sioux City, Mrs. Charles (Janette) Mortensen of Kennedy, Minn., Mrs. Fred (Patricia) Dexter of Alexandria, Va. and Marlene Hattermann of Alexandria.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane, and his grandparents.
