Eternal Rest to a Beloved Mother

Mrs. Johannah (sic) Horan Dies at Home of Mrs. James Archer Yesterday Morning - Was a Pioneer Resident of County

After an illness of several weeks duration which was caused by the infirmities of old age, the death of Mrs. Johannah Horan, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this county came to a peaceful ending yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Archer, 465 West Eighth street, with whom she had made her home during the past three years.

Mrs. Horan bore her illness with true Christian resignation and during the period that she had been confined to her room even to the last moment, recognized and spoke to the sorrowing friends and relatives about her in the beloved and well known manner so characteristic of her.

Johannah Horan was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, and spent her girlhood days in the mother country, where she became acquainted with Thomas Horan to whom she was married in Muscatine on May 1, 1857, by Rev. Peter Mange who was acting as temporary pastor of St. Matthias church during the absence of Father Laurent. The couple resided on East Hill for a short time after their marriage and later moved to Sweetland township where they were one of the pioneer families. To the couple were born seven children, all of whom yet survive with the exception of Mrs. Johannah (sic) Mahoney who died at her home near Victor, Ia., November 25, 1911 (1910). Mr. Horan's demise occurred in Muscatine, May 1, 1903. The surviving children are Mrs. Sara Maher, of Davenport, Ia., Mrs. Mary Dwyer of this city, Judge L.J. Horan of Muscatine, Mrs. Farrell of Atalissa, Ia., and Mrs. J.J. Archer of Muscatine.

One sister, Mrs. Mary Golden, of Philadelphia Penn., and 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild are also left to mourn the death of this estimable woman. One sister, Mrs. Bridget Delaney of Wilton township and also a pioneer of this county preceeded Mrs. Horan in death two years ago.
