Funeral services for John R. Flater, 84, North Liberty and formerly of rural Atalissa, were held June 15, 1995 at the Cedar Valley United Methodist church, with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Mrs. Beverly Blair was the organist and Carol Sherman sang. Pallbearers were Dwain Hepker, Kenneth Smith, Jack Meyers, Marvin Blair, Jack Clair and David Schmidt. Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery, West Liberty.
Mr. Flater died June 12 at the home of his granddaughter in North Liberty, following an extended illness.
The son of Granville and Emma Beggs Flater, he was born Feb. 10, 1911 in Muscatine county. He married Eula Shaffer June 22, 1935 in Marshalltown.
The couple farmed south of Atalissa for many years.
Mr. Flater was a member of the Cedar Valley United Methodist church, where he was a superintendent for several years.
He is survived by a son, Calvin and his wife Norma Flater, Atalissa; 2 brothers, Herschel Flater, Wilton and Eldon Flater, Santa Rosa, Calif.; 3 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a daughter.
Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Hospice.
