Funeral services for Harry L. Schooley, 100, West Liberty, were held April 4, 1995 at the Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty, with the Rev. Ralph Farmer and Dan McFarland officiating. Pallbearers were Donald G. Wilson, Howard MacGowan, Kenneth Ruegegger, Thomas Brooke, Lewis Erwin and Bob Lehman. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Lehman, Donald Erwin, James Keele, Bob Cline, Libbie Krug, Bob Ditmar, Ivan Lenz, Harold Schmidt, Donald Schmidt, Bill Goering, Harold Jones, Judy and Larry Thorn, and Melvin and Mary Ann Krug. Burial was in the North Prairie cemetery, rural West Liberty.
Mr. Schooley died April 1 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, following an extended illness.
The son of Phineas M. and Nellie Crain Schooley, he was born June 14, 1894 in Cedar county. He attended Linn Grove school, rural West Liberty. He graduated from soil, Iowa State University, in 1914. He farmed his entire life south of West Liberty and, helped his father. Later he engaged in the American Polled Hereford Association.
He married Erna Jehle June 3, 1919. They purchased their home 3 miles north of West Liberty, carrying on the cattle business until 1946, when they retired and moved to West Liberty. They enjoyed traveling and meeting new friends. They spent 22 winters in Sebring, Fla. and traveled in all but 3 states. They also visited the Bahamas.
Shortly before his 90th birthday, he was inducted into the National Hall of Fame of American Polled Hereford Association. He presided at the 62nd national banquet in Des Mones, before 1,500 people. His goal was to help improve Polled Hereford cattle and give speeches, when his health permitted.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Pearle and Rix Minor, West Liberty; 2 grandsons, Harry Lee Rogers and Ken Minor and his wife Linda, all of West Liberty, 3 great-grandsons, Harry Robert Rogers, Kevin Todd Minor and Chad Eric Minor; a great-granddaughter, Laura Rogers; a great-great-granddaughter, Erin Rogers; and special friends Marsha and Roy Smith, Harris, Mo. He was preceded in death by a son, Dwain Edward; 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
A memorial fund has been established for the West Liberty rescue unit.
