Funeral services for Elmer Merridith, 85, West Liberty, were held Aug. 23, 1993 at the West Liberty United Methodist church with burial in the Oak Ridge cemetery.

Mr. Merridith died Aug. 18 at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, following a long illness.

The son of Melville H. and Maude Wirthner Merridith, he was born Feb. 18, 1908 south of Downey. He graduated from West Liberty high school in 1927 and Central College in Pella in 1932. He married Grayce Wesselink Oct. 6, 1934 in Sioux Center.

Mr. Merridith owned and operated Merridith Plumbing and Heating Co. in West Liberty for several years. He later worked for the Carey family veterinary business.

He was a member of the United Methodist church, West Liberty Rotary Club, Knights of Pythias and the West Liberty city council for 22 years. He served as West Liberty mayor for 6 years and was on the fire department for 45 years.

Mr. Merridith is survived by a sister, Wilma Davis, West Liberty, and a brother, Robert, Rock Island, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1984.
