George Townsend, resident of this city for almost 30 years, died at 4:45 o'clock Wednesday afternoon following an illness of nine months at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Fred Beckman, 1419 Oregon street. Death was due to a complication of ailments. He was 71 years old. He was born May 10, 1852, near Grandview. About 36 years ago he married Miss Eva Hascher, to which union six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. The family came to Muscatine 28 years ago. His wife preceded him in death by six years. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jesse Townsend, Mrs. Ben Batchelor, Mrs. Emil Vetter and Mrs. Fred Beckman and a son Howard Townsend, all of this city; and one sister, Mrs. Caroline Simons of Elk Point, S. D.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Beckman home and at 2:30 o'clock from the Musserville Methodist Episcopal church. The Rev. P. S. Apfel will officiate. Burial will be made in Greenwood cemetery. - Muscatine Journal
