Walter W. Fowler, aged 26, of Muscatine, was instantly killed Sunday morning in the northeast corner of Louisa county, when his shotgun was accidentally discharged while sneaking on a flock of ducks. The accident occurred on what is known as Kilpeck Island in the Mississippi river just inside the Louisa county line He was carelessly committing a fool offense by dragging a cocked gun behind him as he crawled, when the trigger caught and fired the charge into the back of his head. Two companions were with him, and turned when the shot was heard, in time to see Fowler, the back of his heard blown off, half rise, away and fall to the ground.

The two men notified officials of Muscatine county, but as the accident occurred in the jurisdiction of Louisa county, Sheriff Fred Schwob and coroner, J. H. Collins went to the scene. An investigation was made before the body was removed and it was decided an inquest was unnecessary. The remains were taken to Muscatine. Surviving are a widow and three small children, his father, a brother and a sister.
