MUSCATINE, Iowa - Harvey Owen Vance, 94, of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at home.

Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Barbara Muhs will officiate. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, Muscatine. Online Condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com

Harvey was born on October 28, 1927, in Muscatine, the son of Edward Ellsworth and Ruth Elizabeth Brier Vance. He married Deloris 'Darlene' Wildasin on June 15, 1952, in Moscow.

Harvey graduated from Muscatine High School, Class of 1946. He attended and enjoyed the many class reunions.

Harvey was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Corporal in the 24th Infantry Division from November 20, 1950, until August 23, 1952. He was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, the Bronze Star, one Purple Heart Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and Combat Infantry Mans Badge.

"I'm proud to be a veteran and I attended several 24th Infantry Division reunions with the special friends I met while serving in the United States Army. I always felt fortunate that I was born in the USA. The greatest country in the world and life's experiences that made me what I am today and felt sorry for the ones that never had that opportunity."

After his discharge, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers at Lock and Dam No. 16 from 1953 through 1996. He retired as Lockmaster. He was awarded the Supervisor Civilian Service Award upon retirement at 68 years of age.

He was a member of the Muscatine Kiwanis Club for several years, receiving four Top Peanut Award Trophies for peanut sales. He was a member of Faith United Church of Christ. Harvey was very proud of and enjoyed his family most of all.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Vance of Muscatine; five children, Michael C. Vance and wife, Candiss, of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, Cathy R. Schmitt and husband, David, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Robert A. Vance and wife, Sheryl, of Muscatine, Lynn D. Vance of Davenport, and Julie A. Hardman and husband, Joe, of Muscatine; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas (Irene) Vance, Tara (Andrew) Wommack, Tyler (Tiffany) Vance, Sarah Schmitt, Lauren Schmitt, Jonathan (Kara) Vance, Laura (Aaron) Holsman, Hanna (Ben) Weinstein, Tye (Rebecca) Hardman, and Emma Hardman; and eight great grandchildren, Elias, Thalia, Daphne, Naomi, Norah, Isabelle, Violet, and Vivian.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings, Robert E. Vance, Shirley E. Vance, and Delores Vance.
