Funeral services for Alva Smith, 72, were held Feb. 17 at the West Liberty Presbyterian church with the Rev. Charles McCracken officiating. Burial was in the West Branch cemetery.

Mr. Smith died early Feb. 15 at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, following a brief illness.

The son of Francis and Susan Smith, he was born June 11, 1897 at Santa Fe, Mo.

Alva Smith married the former Antonetta Peterson, Dec. 30, 1922 at West Branch. He was a member, ordained elder and deacon of the West Liberty Presbyterian church. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War I. The couple had farmed in the West Liberty-West Branch area.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Antonetta Smith; 3 daughters, Mrs. Hugh (Betty) Probst, West Liberty; Mrs. Raymond (Lucille) Bergthold, Tustin, Calif. and Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Barkalow, Iowa City; 3 brothers and 4 sisters all in Missouri and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, 3 sisters and one brother.
