Obituary

Died, in this city, at half-past three o’clock A.M., April 25, 1872, of consumption, WALTER H. SIMPSON.
The deceased was born in Hartford county, Connecticut, Oct. 1, 1829, and came to Muscatine with his brother, who resides in Lake Township, in the fall of 1854. Soon after arriving in Muscatine he entered into partnership in the marble business with a Mr. Huebener, who had a small yard on the lot now occupied by Silverman & Cook’s Banking House. Not long afterwards, they purchased the lot on the corner of second and Walnut streets and removed their works to their own more commodious quarters. Soon after this Mr. H. retired from the business.
Mr. Simpson was one of the best workers in marble in the State, and by dint of hard work and industry he prospered until his failing health compelled him to retire from business, which he did June 1, 1870. He lived a most exemplary life from his early youth to his death. Unlike many boys surrounded by similar temptations, he “sowed no wild oats” in his youth to reap a harvest of unpleasant reflections and bitter repentance in after years. He remarked to his brother, when over 23 years old, that he had never once tasted of ardent spirits. He was a man of strong convictions, and acted from a sense of duty and not for pretense or show. He served one term as a member of the City Council, having been elected in 1864. For seventeen years previous to his death, he was a member of the Congregational Church, and he died as he had lived, a firm believer in the Christian faith. In his death society has lost a valuable member, the church a bright ornament and his surviving widow a kind husband. The universal opinion of those who knew him, was expressed by the sexton, when informed of his death – “He was a good man!”
