Death Claims A. J. Weaver, 66 – Illness Since Friday is Fatal to Veteran Physician
Dr. A. J. Weaver, 66, member of the state board of health and for more than 30 years a practicing physician here, died at Bellevue hospital at 2 a.m. today. Death came after a brief illness. Dr. Weaver was taken ill Friday with a blood stream infection.

Dr. Weaver had been an active physician in Muscatine for almost 34 years. He was prominently identified with many civic and fraternal organizations, and as a member of the Kiwanis club, of the chamber of commerce, was surgeon for the Milwaukee railway, a member of the Boy Scout council, was secretary-treasurer of Bellevue hospital and was pension examiner for the United States.

He was identified with Iowa lodge No. 2, A.F. & A. M., Washington chapter No. 4, R. A. M., Webb Council, No. 18 Zarephath consistory, No. 4, De Molay commandery No. 1, Knights Templar. Politically he was a republican.

Since July, 1897, he had engaged in active practice in Muscatine. He was a member of the American Medical association, the Iowa State Medical society and the Muscatine County Medical society. He was active with Dr. J. L. Klein in the establishment of Bellevue hospital and was also one of the organizers of Hershey Memorial hospital.

Dr. Weaver was born in Muscatine county, July 27, 1865, the son of John and Joanna Cole Weaver. He was reared on his father’s farm and attended the district schools in the county.

Later he enrolled at Western college, Toledo, Ia. After leaving college he taught school for some years, becoming principal of the high school in Conesville.

Studied Pharmacy.

He studied pharmacy later and in 1886 engaged in the drug business at Letts, also serving as deputy postmaster for three years during the President Cleveland administration and as a postmaster under President Harrison.

In 1892 he sold his drug business and started the study of medicine. In 1895 he was graduated from the Bennett Medical college of Chicago, receiving an appointment as intern in Cook County hospital. He was graduated from the institution in 1897.

Jan. 14, 1931, Dr. D. Steelsmith, Iowa health commissioner at Des Moines, named Dr. Weaver as a member of the state board of health. He succeeded Dr. Sugg of Clinton. He had previously been a city health officer.

Surviving are his widow; a daughter Mrs. Elmer Steinmetz, Muscatine; three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Messick, Sebastopol Calif., Mrs. Homer Vincent, Letts, Mrs. John Sipe, Chicago.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals at 2:30 Thursday afternoon by the Rev. B. F. Schwartz, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

The body will remain at the Fairbanks chapel until 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, when it will be taken to the residence at 516 Chestnut street. Friends may view it there between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The body will then be returned to the Fairbanks chapel for services that afternoon.
