Resident of Nichols for Past 55 Years Dies After Long Illness.

Nichols – Albert Jackson Mapes, aged 74, a resident of Nichols for the past 55 years, died at his home in this city at 8:40 o’clock this morning. About four years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and for the past five weeks had been in a serious condition. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but probably will be held some time Saturday.
He was the son of Hiram and Lucy Scott Mapes and was born at Brighton, Mich., May 20, 1857. When 9 years of age the family moved to the West Liberty community and later to Nichols. He was married Aug. 17, 1879 to Mary Polk of Nichols, who survives together with two children, Mrs. Tillie Meiskey of Muscatine, and Louis Mapes of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Frank Hummel of Nichols, and eight grandchildren.
He at one time was accepted as a member of the Methodist church on probation and was a member of the Woodman lodge.
Note: Should be Mary Pope. Also should be Meisky.
